darktable, an alternative to Canon DPP and Adobe Lightroom

darktable, an alternative to Canon DPP and Adobe Lightroom
Free and Compatible with Linux / Windows / MaxOS

What is darktable?
darktable is a virtual lighttable and darkroom for photographers: it manages your digital negatives in a database and lets you view them through a zoomable lighttable. it also enables you to develop raw images and enhance them.

darktable is an open source photography workflow application and raw developer. A virtual lighttable and darkroom for photographers. It manages your digital negatives in a database, lets you view them through a zoomable lighttable and enables you to develop raw images and enhance them.

Raw is the unprocessed capture straight from the camera’s sensor to the memory card, nothing has been altered. There are multiple alternatives in the open source world for raw development (ufraw, dcraw, rawtherapee) but darktable tries to fill the gap between the excellent existing free raw converters and image management tools (such as e.g. ufraw, rawstudio, f-spot, digikam, shotwell). It focuses on the workflow to make it easier for the photographer to quickly handle the thousands of images a day of shooting can produce. It’s also one of the very few FOSS projects able to do tethered shooting.

The internal architecture of darktable allows users to easily add modules for all sorts of image processing, from the very simple (crop, exposure, spot removal) to the most advanced (simulation of human night vision).

The user interface is built around efficient caching of image metadata and mipmaps, all stored in a database. The main focus lies on user interaction, both in terms of a smooth interface design as well as processing speed. High quality output is also one of our goals.

All editing is fully non-destructive and only operates on cached image buffers for display. The full image is only converted during export. Raw image loading is done using rawspeed, high-dynamic range and standard image formats such as jpeg are also supported. The core operates completely on floating point values, so darktable can not only be used for photography but also for scientifically acquired images or output of renderers (high dynamic range).

For a more complete list of darktable’s current features have a look at the features page. Or – even better – just install it and try it out!

darktable is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License Version 3 or later.

Canon’s updated SDK extends Linux compatibility

Canon’s updated Software Development Kit extends Linux compatibility

Canon’s updated SDK extends Linux compatibility

London, UK, 22 February 2024 – Canon Europe announces the latest evolution in its EOS Digital Software Development Kit (EDSDK) – free of charge software now fortified with Linux compatibility. EDSDK has long been pivotal in allowing software developers and computer programmers to design tailored digital solutions for controlling Canon cameras, making it an indispensable tool for professionals in the field. Core features include remote shooting, image transfer, camera setting and live view monitor.

In this latest update, the added Linux compatibility on ARM processors opens new avenues for businesses seeking to streamline workflows. This will benefit industries across use cases such as photobooths, traffic enforcement cameras and 3D photogrammetry.

The evolution of low-cost and compact computers and such as Raspberry Pi or Nvidia Jetson Nano can provide adequate computing power for camera remote control with a tiny footprint. A combination of Canon EOS cameras and microcontroller boards offers further flexibility and expanded connectivity for camera integration. Small host computers can be placed in narrow enclosures allowing a USB connection between the camera and computer, which is beneficial for robust communication.

When a solution requires dozens of cameras to capture objects from all directions (3D photogrammetry scanners) a number of computers are also needed to control all cameras simultaneously. Utilising single board computers, a number of devices can be installed for local remote camera control, with one main host computer communicating via Ethernet – one of the optimal hardware configurations for multiple camera control.

Devices with an embedded GPU enable powerful image processing such as deep learning and image recognition, which has excellent affinity with high resolution and quality images captured by Canon EOS cameras.

Akiyoshi Ishii, Senior Manager Technical Integration at Canon Europe, comments: “We’re really excited to release the Linux version of EDSDK because it’s a long-awaited feature from camera SDK developers. EDSDK has proved the capability of EOS cameras for industrial usage over the past decade. The EDSDK for Linux certainly lets us move forward to the next stage and we’ll encounter unseen use cases created by camera SDK developers.”

To access the Canon SDK download, register interest via the Canon Developer Programme: developers.canon-europe.com/developers. Technical support is available in the EMEA region via a support request form for developers, and there is a forum to discuss questions and ideas.

Canon breathing new life into one of music’s most iconic pieces

Sign of the times: How Canon technology is breathing new life into one of music’s most iconic pieces

Canon Europe supports immersive exhibition starring inclusive choir by using elevated printing technology

Canon breathing new life into one of music’s most iconic pieces
Original image by Mariko Tagashira

London, UK, 20 February 2024 – Almost two centuries on from its first ever performance, one of music’s most iconic pieces is set to be revitalised for a whole new audience, thanks to pioneering Canon technology.

Beethoven’s legendary 9th Symphony was first performed in Vienna in May 1824 and now, two hundred years later, it returns to the city as part of “An die Freude”, an inclusive and experimental photo exhibition which runs from 20 February to 17 March.

As part of its commitment to making the arts more accessible, Canon is supporting the exhibition which will see inclusive choir The White Hands Chorus Nippon (WHCN) take centre stage for a visual interpretation of “An die Freude/Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. The choir, founded by Artistic Director Erika Colon, brings together children with and without physical disabilities, with deaf members conveying sound and emotion through sign language, movement and facial expression.

Professional photographer Mariko Tagashira has accompanied the choir for several years and identified a unique way to capture the children's gestures as poetic traces of light in her pictures using long-term exposures. These photos were developed to create a visible, tactile interpretation of the “An die Freude” experience.

The exhibition features a series of photographs, with several of the images printed in relief, using the Canon PRISMAelevate XL printing technology and Arizona printer series. The principle of Elevated Printing is layering multiple layers of ink on top of each other. The result is a fully tactile and immersive experience for visitors to conjure vivid mental representations of the works. In addition, explanations printed in braille support visually impaired visitors to fully understand the story behind the music.

Canon’s elevated printed imagery is produced and exhibited with the experience of the visually impaired community in mind. This is a continuation of Canon’s efforts to make art more accessible, using technology to pioneer how those with disabilities can create and experience the arts.

The exhibition will take place at the WestLicht Museum for Photography in Vienna.

“The arts should be accessible to everyone, and music and photography are right at the heart of this. We are proud to use our imaging technology to allow more people to experience the powerful emotions and stories told by the White Hands Chorus through Mariko Tagashira’s photography. Our Elevated Printing technology creates an alternative sensory experience which we hope can create a truly accessible exhibition that everyone can interact and engage with.” Dirk Brouns, Vice President Large Format Systems at Canon Production Printing.

Canon Celebrates 21st Year of No. 1 Share of Global Market

Canon Celebrates 21st Consecutive Year of No. 1 Share of Global Interchangeable-Lens Digital Camera Market

Canon Celebrates 21st Year of No. 1 Share of Global Market

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 20, 2024 —Canon U.S.A., Inc. today announced that its parent company, Canon Inc. is celebrating that the company's interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share1 of the global market for 21 consecutive years from 2003 to 2023.

Canon’s EOS series of interchangeable lens digital cameras are imaging systems based on the basic concept of "speed, comfort, and high image quality," for which the company has developed proprietary key components, including CMOS image sensors, the DIGIC image processors, and interchangeable lenses. Putting together a wide-ranging product lineup - from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals to entry-level models that allow users to enjoy full-scale shooting with easy operation, as well as a rich selection of over 1152 RF and EF series lenses that make possible a wealth of creative expression - Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

During the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions) in September 2003. By launching this groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, Canon spurred growth in the digital SLR market, capturing the top share of the global market and heralding the age of digital SLR cameras. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS 1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. Canon’s desire to further expand the boundaries of visual expression led to its next-generation EOS R System, launched in October 2018, that includes the full-frame mirrorless camera EOS R5—the first camera to feature 8K video recording3 - released in July 2020 and the EOS R3 in November 2021, which features tracking of fast-moving subjects and continuous shooting performance. In addition, Canon launched the EOS VR System, designed to record video for virtual reality content, in December 2021.

In 2023, Canon led demand for mirrorless cameras and lenses by further expanding its lineup of EOS R series cameras and lenses. This expanded lineup included the EOS R50 (released in March 2023), an APS-C size mirrorless camera complete with easy-to-use and convenient functions, the EOS R8 (released in April 2023), a full-frame camera that is both small and lightweight while demonstrating high performance and the EOS R100 (released in June 2023), an APS-C size mirrorless camera that even beginner photographers can use to enjoy full-fledged shooting, and 9 RF lenses4.

Additionally, Canon-brand cameras comprised the number one share5 of Rugby World Cup France 2023, demonstrating that they have earned the deep trust of professional photographers. Based on the support of this wide range of customers, Canon managed to secure the No. 1 share of the global market for the 21st consecutive year.

Canon will continue to refine its proprietary imaging technologies while bringing fulfillment and excitement to people’s daily lives as well as promoting the spread of photo and video culture by providing products, services, and solutions that meet its customers’ diverse needs.

Former alumni have gone on to work for reputable news agencies and internationally renowned publications and continued to build successful careers. 2022 alumni Mohamed Mahdy (b. 1996), whose work focusses on the hidden and often unseen communities in Egypt, has won a main prize at the 2023 World Press Photo awards in the Open Format category. Fellow alumni Alexandra Corcode (b. 2000) has been selected for the 2023 Tom Stoddard Award for Excellence with her intimate portrayal of loneliness and abandonment amongst the elderly generation in her home country of Romania. Finalists of the 2023 programme, Ebrahim Alipoor and Fatma Fahmy, have both been selected for the 2024 VII Mentor program, run by VII Academy.

The 2024 edition is open to students and interns1 residing and studying in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with applications running from February 12th until March 7th. A limited number of spaces will also be available to talent endorsed by industry professionals. Submissions will be judged by a panel of editors from Getty Images, Reuters Pictures, AFP and EPA who will decide on the initial cohort of the region’s most promising young storytellers.

    One-to-one mentorships

The selected students will be partnered up with one of the programme’s expert mentors, with the aim to discuss their current work and longer-term career aspirations in dedicated one-to-one sessions. Virtual reviews throughout summer will help refine their new project proposal and current portfolio – with a particular focus on exploring different editing options and ways to further strengthen narrative skills and develop authorial signatures.

Canon Ambassador and photojournalist, Brent Stirton said, “This is a unique programme to meet and spend time with curators, editors and photographers – a real investment into the future of photography. Stats show that only a fraction of those who study photography survive in the profession long term, and I know that it will make a profound difference for those selected. Growing up in South Africa, there was no way that I could’ve accessed some of the best editors and photographers in the world when I was starting out, much less borrowing some of the best gear out there.”

Girona workshop and Visa pour l'Image in Perpignan, France

In September, up to 25 students will be invited to a four-day Canon workshop in a grand Catalan farmhouse in Girona, Spain, concluding with a final night’s stay at the Visa pour l’Image international photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France.

The workshop will offer an intimate forum to exchange ideas and build relationships with renowned professionals from the world of photography. Group portfolio reviews offer a rich learning opportunity for students and a chance to both critique the work of their fellow peers, as well as receive professional feedback on their own.

Aside from taking in the key exhibitions and evening screenings during Visa pour l’Image, students will also have the opportunity to participate in additional portfolio reviews and further expand their network.

World-Class In-Body Image Stabilisation : Canon Full Frame EOS R3
The EOS R3 features a five-axis in-body Image Stabilizer for stills photography and video. This works hand-in-hand with the optical IS found in many RF lenses, resulting in a staggering eight stops of protection against camera shake. This allows creative use of long shutter speeds even when shooting handheld, opening up new ways of expressing movement in your images. A broader level of vibrations can be compensated for than with many other IS systems, resulting in even crisper sharpness. (Source: Canon SA

Canon In-Body Image Stabilization : Canon Full Frame EOS R5 / Canon EOS R6
"The EOS R5 and EOS R6 are Canon’s first cameras to be equipped with In-Body Image Stabilizer (In-Body IS), which not only works with the optical (in-lens) image stabilizer (Optical IS) on compatible lenses to enhance image stabilisation capabilities, but also makes it possible to reduce camera shake by up to eight shutter speed stops’ equivalent when using non-stabilised lenses. Learn more about it in this article." -- Reported by: Kazuo Nakahara, Digital Camera Magazine.
