U.N. and Canon Europe to Focus on Least Developed Countries

Developing Lens: U.N. and Canon Europe amplify Youth Delegates from Least Developed Countries

Developing Lens: U.N. and Canon Europe amplify Youth Delegates from Least Developed Countries

New York, NY, February 28, 2023 – Attendees of the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) taking place from 5th to 9th March will focus on the Doha Programme of Action: an ambitious 10-year action plan to get the world’s most vulnerable countries back on track after the most recent devastating events and ongoing global challenges, and accelerating towards realizing the global vision for sustainable development expressed by the Sustainable Development Goals.

In a bid to ensure that young people are represented in this important conference, Youth delegates from across the world’s Least Developed Countries are capturing images of their lives and communities to raise awareness of World Leaders joining the Conference on what it is like to be young in the world’s LDCs.

This comes as part of the collaboration between Canon Europe and the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) to ensure that a selection of youth delegates from across the 46 LDCs are present in the ten-year action plan.

Canon will run a special edition of the Canon Young People Programme (YPP) at the LDC5 conference. YPP has seen Canon teach over 6,750 participants from 27 different countries about the importance of communicating around the SDGs. In the lead up to the three part workshop, Canon has sent Canon EOS 4000D cameras and lenses to over thirty Youth Delegates ahead of LDC5 in Doha in March to help them document their lives and the situation in their local communities. The young delegates’ stories and films will be featured in the UN HQ exhibition as well as promotional material for the conference.

“We all see the world through a unique lens based on our lived experiences—similarly, youth see the future through lenses less inhibited by past outcomes. Their perspectives are important to ground our current reality, to understand their potential and goals for their communities.” said Rabab Fatima, UN High Representative for the Least Developed Countries.

Canon representatives will also be present at LDC5 to provide a series of educational storytelling workshops and discuss the important role of imaging in advocacy. The LDC5 edition of the YPP will feature Canon Ambassador Guia Besana and Michel Lunanga, Youth Representative from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and mentor and teacher for the YPP, who advocates for social justice in DRC by developing and promoting a more representative range of voices and perspectives in photography.

Michel explains, "Art and technology are powerful tools that can promote solutions to global challenges such as human rights protections, gender equality, education, and supporting disadvantaged and marginalized groups, which can lead to sustainable and critically endogenous development."

The workshops will highlight the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how visual storytelling can be used to inspire action toward fulfilling them. The Youth Delegates in attendance will develop their visual storytelling skills and create narratives around their images demonstrating the changes they would like to see in the world. Following the workshops delegates will share photographs with accompanying messages to express the changes they want to see happen in the world over the next ten years based on what they learn about communication.

‘During LDC5, Canon will also collaborate with the UN SDG Action Campaign team on a number of side events, with speakers including Jeanine El Moughrabi, Canon Sustainability Manager Middle East and Africa, who will join UN Secretary General's Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change Nisreen Abdelrahman Hassan Elsaim and Marina Ponti, Director of the UN SDG Action Campaign, in coming together to discuss key priorities and creative ways to inspire and mobilize action for the SDGs.’

Adam Pensotti, Head of Canon Young People Programme and EMEA Social initiatives, said “Inspired by of our corporate philosophy of kyosei – living and working together for the common good – we’re working to support young people across the world to tell stories they think will support the UN ambition of achieving Sustainable Development. Through LDC5 and our support of the Youth Delegates from around the world, we are helping to make their voices heard with 1:1 tuition and creative storytelling workshops.”

You can follow #LDC5 on social media to view and share the developing lenses of LDC5 youth delegates, while full details on the event can be found here.

In certain areas of the province of Maniema, it is hard to access clean water. Some households dig deep holes to reach clean groundwater. While this requires a lot of effort, it reduces the time required to acquire water and the risks they may encounter on the road.

“Since its early days in the 1980s, CPS has been a trusted partner for countless professionals, and with any legacy programme, we needed to reassess whether it is still serving the demands of today’s creators. As a leader in imaging, we welcome seeing the professional landscape get more diverse and certain barriers to entry lifting, but this also means that we have to acknowledge the changing needs of professionals who are looking to succeed in this industry. We want to arm creatives with the very best product support, so they are well placed to thrive in an increasingly competitive environment – whether this will be through offering repairs at reduced rates, fast tracking service requests or upskilling businesses through coaching sessions”, says Elena Burnhill, CPS Programme Manager, Canon Europe.

Canon Launches New PSIRT Security Website

Canon has established the Canon PSIRT global website as a centralized point of contact for security researchers around the world to report information related to vulnerabilities discovered in Canon products and services.

Canon PSIRT Global Website

TOKYO, February 15, 2023—Canon Inc. announced today that the company has established the Canon PSIRT (Product Security Incident Response Team), and a security website (https://psirt.canon) designed to gather and centralize information on, and respond to, product and service vulnerabilities. In addition, the company has strengthened its vulnerability countermeasures by being authorized (1) as a CNA (CVE Numbering Authority), which empowers the company to index and publish vulnerability information by assigning an internationally recognized CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) ID.

Canon has established the Canon PSIRT global website as a centralized point of contact for security researchers around the world to report information related to vulnerabilities discovered in Canon products and services.

This will empower Canon to respond swiftly to security researchers and promote early discovery and resolution of security-related issues.

Security website Canon PSIRT (2): https://psirt.canon

A CVE ID is a unique identifier assigned to each vulnerability within the database managed by the CVE Program, an international initiative aimed at discovering vulnerabilities. By managing a unified system that assigns a unique CVE ID to each vulnerability, it is easier to share information and associate additional information with that vulnerability. Canon, now authorized as a CNA, can assign and publish CVE IDs for Canon product and service vulnerabilities. This enables CVE IDs, conventionally indexed by third-parties, to be more quickly identified and judged, thus helping Canon to index the product or service vulnerability. In turn, this framework is expected to make possible more prompt resolutions to security-related issues.

Going forward, Canon will continue striving to ensure customers can use the company's products and services with peace of mind through the strengthening of vulnerability countermeasures and continuous efforts to improve the level of security.

1.Canon Inc. received an invitation from JPCERT Coordination Center (JPCERT/CC) to apply to become a CNA and was authorized by the CVE Program.

2. As the majority of security researchers communicate in English, Canon's security website operates with English as the standard language.

Canon EOS R50: High Quality Vlogging Made Easy

Canon’s new entry APS-C mirrorless camera is packed with smart features that make vlogging and content creation a breeze without having to get fiddly with settings!

Canon EOS R50: High Quality Vlogging Made Easy

SINGAPORE, 8 February 2023 — Canon today announced the EOS R50, a new compact, lightweight APS-C mirrorless camera set to replace the EOS 77D and EOS M50 Mark II. The entry-level camera is packed with many fun, creative tools and automated features, allowing users to create high-quality vlogs and images easily with minimal camera operation.

“With a focus on our video capabilities, we are expanding our equipment lineup to cater to all users, from production houses to the vlogging enthusiast. The EOS R50 signifies our commitment to creating equipment for everyone, even first-time camera users. We hope that it helps those who are new to vlogging discover the vlogger in them,” said Imasaka Daido, Director of Regional ICB Sales & Marketing, Canon Singapore.

High-quality Video Right Out of The Box
The quality of a video is largely dependent on the quality of the footage. With EOS R50, you can be assured of the high quality of the footage.

24.2 MP APS-C Format Image Sensor
The EOS R50’s APS-C format image sensor is three times larger than the 1-inch sensor on the latest smartphones. This mean sharper, more detailed images and videos, and less noise (graininess) even in low light. Users can also look forward to beautiful, natural-looking bokeh (shallow focus) effects.

High-quality Video: First Entry EOS-series APS-C Mirrorless Camera to Produce 6K-Oversampled Cropless 4K
With 24.2 megapixels, the EOS R50 is also capable of producing high-quality cropless 4K 30p video oversampled from 6K worth of data. Oversampling means more information to reduce artefacts and other issues, so despite your vlogging experience and skill, the image quality will look pristine and professional.

Designed for Intuitive Vlogging
With ample modes and features that simplify shooting, the EOS R50 is designed for vloggers who want the image quality of a dedicated camera without the learning curve that usually comes with having to operate one.

Lightweight at only about 375 g1, it is around the same size as the EOS M50 Mark II. Perfect for vlogging on the go!

Intelligent Focus Switching during Close-up Demos
The Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, which detects and tracks people, animals (dogs, cats, and birds) and vehicles (motorsports cars and motorcycles) based on their characteristics just got even smarter. For close-up demos, the Movie for Close-up Demo mode quickly and automatically switches focus to the subject closest to the camera. You can showcase your new gadget or online shopping loot in one smooth take, with the focus where you want it to be.

Support for focus breathing ensures that there are no distracting changes in angle of view that tend to occur during focus transitions when vlogging.

Image Stabilisation Optimised for Handheld Vlogging
Get seamless, steady footage even when shooting handheld: The EOS R50 comes with not just one, but two different Movie IS (Image Stabilizer)2 levels (‘Enhanced’ and ‘On’) that digitally perform 5-axis camera shake correction, enhanced when combined with an RF lens with in-lens IS.

When the monitor is in “selfie” mode, the default “Movie IS: Enhanced” mode optimises image stabilisation for handheld wide-angle shooting, correcting the unwanted motion that tends to become more obvious at the edges of wide-angle images. You can switch between two levels by simply tapping the “Wide-angle” button, to avoid excessive close-ups.

Auto Leveling Mode3
For scenes and shooting angles where it is hard to keep the camera level, the auto level mode automatically corrects horizontal tilt. This would save time from manual correction in another app.

Share Your Content Quickly: High-quality Livestreams with Just One USB Cable
All you need to livestream high-quality footage4 and audio from your EOS R50 is one USB-C connection to your computer. It’s plug-and-play with no drivers required.

Straight from Camera to Phone
The Camera Connect smartphone app, which is fuss-free to set up, lets you easily transfer videos and JPEG photos from your camera to a smartphone either through a wireless Wi-Fi or wired USB-C connection. As the camera supports transcoding, which makes 4K and Full HD video files lighter, even high-quality video files can be transferred and uploaded to social media smoothly!

Get Great Photos Easily
A host of new intelligent creative features make it even easier to make the most of the camera’s imaging capabilities, even if you are not familiar with technical photography terms and complicated post-processing. Some notable new functions are:
  • Advanced A+: Automatically captures and blends exposure-bracketed images for better night and backlit portraits, and focus-bracketed images for images that are in focus from front to back.
  • Creative Bracket: Automatically generates multiple versions of a shot taken by the user with different brightness and colour tone settings. The settings of the autogenerated shots are shown so that users can learn.
  • Subject blur guide: Available in the Panning SCN mode. Helps the user practice panning and improve the success rate of panning shots.

Kit Options
The EOS R50 is available in black and white, with two kit options
  • With the RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM
  • With the RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM

RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM: Extend Your Reach
The RF-S55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM, a compact, lightweight, and affordable telephoto zoom lens, is the latest addition to the RF-S lineup. Providing a full-frame equivalent angle of view of 88 to 336 mm on an APS-C image sensor, the lens is set to expand users’ creative horizons, allowing them to capture images that are difficult to get with a standard kit lens or smartphone. These include:
  • Sharp, high-quality closeups of subjects that are further away
  • More pronounced shallow focus effects
  • Images with compressed perspectives

The lens also has excellent close-up shooting capabilities: its 0.28x maximum magnification at the 210 mm end (more than the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM) enables semi-macro photography at a relatively short closest focusing distance of 0.73 m.

Besides having a native 4.5 stops of image stabilisation, RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM is capable of providing up to 7.0 stops’ image stabilisation through Coordinated Control IS when used with EOS R system cameras equipped with In-Body IS.

Elevate Your Content “cR8tion” with the EOS R8

Capture high-quality source footage for your new productions with Canon’s latest full-frame camera, EOS R8

Elevate Your Content “cR8tion” with the EOS R8

SINGAPORE, 8 February 2023 — Canon today announced the EOS R8, a new entry full-frame camera that combines many of the powerful video and still shooting features of the EOS R6 Mark II, such as Canon Log 3 and up to 40 fps continuous shooting with the portability of the EOS RP.

“Canon recognises the growing importance of video and is dedicated to meeting the varying requirements of video creators. The EOS R8 provides an affordable entry point for content creators who want to get more serious about video and require a full-frame camera capable of recording source footage that fits into more advanced production workflows. As its features also integrate easily with those on existing professional and advanced EOS R system and Cinema EOS cameras, it also makes an excellent sub-camera for professional videographers and hybrid shooters,” said Imasaka Daido, Director of Regional ICB Sales & Marketing, Canon Singapore.

Stay Agile with Canon’s Smallest and Lightest EOS Full-frame Mirrorless Camera
20 g lighter than the EOS RP at approximately 461 g (with battery pack and SD card), the compact and lightweight EOS R8 keeps users agile, giving them an edge when it comes to creative camera angles and transitions.

Camera shake would no longer pose a problem when shooting handheld videos as the EOS R8 is equipped with Movie Digital IS, which digitally performs tilt correction as well as 5-axis image stabilisation during video shooting. Hence stable handheld videos can be ensured even when using lenses with no optical image stabilitsation (Optical IS). When combined with a lens that has Optical IS, the two systems perform coordinated control for enhanced image stabilisation results.

A Variety of Recording Options to Meet Different Production Needs
From run-and-gun event coverage to documentaries and short films that require more post-production work, the EOS R8 is well-equipped to tackle the different requirements and workflows to produce stunning video.

High-quality Source Footage from 6K Oversampling—Up to 4K 60p
The quality of a video is largely dependent on the quality of the source footage. The EOS R8’s newly developed 24.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor enables 6K data to be obtained from its entire width, producing high-quality cropless oversampled 4K UHD footage at up to 60p.

For productions where you need to leave the camera rolling, the EOS R8 has heat suppression measures which allow you to shoot up to 4K 30p with no recording time restriction, and up to 30 minutes at 4K 60p.

Dramatic 6x Slow Motion Video with Full HD 180p
For more dramatic scenes, shooting in Full HD at as high as 180p will produce 30p output with action slowed down to 1/6 the speed. Rolling shutter distortion is reduced to almost half that on the EOS RP when shooting at 4K 30p/25p.

HDR PQ Video and Canon Log 3: High Dynamic Range Options to Suit Your Post-Production Workflow
Besides normal 8-bit recording, the EOS R8 offers two options for recording 10-bit 4:2:2 high dynamic range video. HDR PQ provides amazing dynamic range and beautiful colours straight out of camera when viewed on a HDR display. Meanwhile, Canon Log 3 offers the same level of information that is not “baked-in”, offering more flexibility for heavier post-processing workflows that involve colour grading.

Consistent and Seamless Focus
Focus is crucial in both photography and videography and is near impossible to correct in post-production. The EOS R8 nails it effortlessly during both still and video shooting with the same Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology as the EOS R6 Mark II.

Acquire Focus in As Fast As 0.03 seconds1
Experience fast, accurate focusing: the EOS iTR AF X system not only detects and tracks people, animals, and vehicles by deep learning, it also identifies other subjects and “locks” onto them using characteristics like shape, colour, and brightness. This helps the camera to acquire focus in as fast as 0.03 seconds, and track subjects tenaciously over 100% x 100% (horizontal x vertical) of the image frame. Hence, this is ideal for capturing birds, wildlife, and action.

Works Even in Low Light
The low light limits of up to EV-6.52 for stills and EV-42 for video mean that the AF operates even in dark conditions. This works with the camera’s high native ISO speed ranges of up to ISO 102,400 (still shooting) and ISO 25,600 (video shooting) to enhance low light usability.

Professional Cinema Camera Features
These features in the EOS R8 will help to elevate your video creations:
  • Focus breathing correction: reduces visible fluctuations in the angle of view during focusing.
  • False colours and zebras: advanced visual aids for exposure adjustment and setting.
  • Aspect marker display: for easier framing of video to fit various social media dimensions.
  • UVC (USB Video Class)/UAC (USB Audio Class) support: Plug-and-play direct transmission of audio and Full HD video to a computer with just a USB connection; ideal for livestreaming.

It also features the Multi-function Shoe, a digital interface that enables a cordless digital setup with compatible accessories such as external microphones.

Two New Lenses: RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and RF-S55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM
In addition to the EOS R8, Canon also announced two new additions to the RF lens lineup, both of which offer up to 4.5 stops’ equivalent Optical IS and support for focus breathing correction.

RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM: The Smallest, Lightest RF-mount Zoom Lens for Full-Frame Cameras
Weighing approximately 210 g and measuring 5.8 cm when retracted, the RF24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM complements the compact EOS R8, to form a 671 g combination that is lighter than the EOS R5 body alone! It covers a wide-angle to standard view on a full-frame camera, offering compositional flexibility that sets it apart from similarly sized prime lenses.

Equipped with 4.5 stops’ Optical IS, the lens will empower users to explore new angles. It also supports enhanced stabilisation through Coordinated Control IS with cameras that feature Movie Digital IS3 and In-Body IS: for the latter, up to 7 stops’ IS is possible.

RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM: An Ultra Portable Telephoto Zoom Lens for APS-C EOS R Camera Bodies
APS-C EOS R camera users who want a compact, lightweight telephoto lens to match their camera bodies now have the RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM, which weighs approximately 270 g. The new lens provides a full-frame equivalent angle of view of approximately 88 to 336 mm, with semi macro capabilities (up to 0.28x magnification) and close-up shooting (closest focusing distance of 0.73 m) at the tele end. The use of two UD lenses and two optically placed aspherical lenses correct chromatic aberrations, delivering high-resolution and sharpness with excellent colour throughout the entire zoom range.

Plus, Image Story Telling Through R-Mount Lenses Is Ramped Up With Additions of the New RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM and RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM Lenses

MELVILLE, NY, February 7, 2023 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the launch of the new EOS R50 camera body, ideal for entry level users, and the EOS R8, an extremely compact, full-frame camera aimed at advanced amateur photo and video enthusiasts looking for budget-friendly options that don't sacrifice performance. Additionally, two new RF-Mount lenses are being introduced to the ever-growing R-mount lens line-up.

Canon EOS R50 APS-C Camera

Canon EOS R50 APS-C Body

Compact, lightweight and ideal for those looking to step up their video quality, the EOS R50 provides an impressive movie-shooting experience thanks to the APS-C sensor, with 4K video, uncropped 4K capture (at all frame rates), and outstanding Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. With the addition of whole area tracking, subject detection, and movie-prerecording, difficult photo and movie opportunities can be easier to capture with a 24.2-million-pixel, APS-C sized image sensor. In addition, the EOS R50 is equipped with an eye-level electronic viewfinder to help achieve shot steadiness and ease viewing in bright sunlight conditions. A great camera for those who are looking to lean into interchangeable lenses, the EOS R50 camera can capture travel adventures, family portraits, sports, wildlife and even help a small business with marketing imagery. For those who are budding content creators, the EOS R50 will be available later in 2023 as part of a Content Creator Kit – packaged with a microphone, lens and grip. Overall, the EOS R50 is truly a jack of all content creation trades.

“The first time I picked up the EOS R50, I noticed how light it was. When I saw the footage, I wondered how the quality can be so good when it’s this lightweight in my hand. My mind was blown!” Bianca Matisse Taylor – Content creator and blogger

Canon EOS R8 APS-C Camera

Canon EOS R8 Full-Frame Body

The EOS R8 — affordable and functional — is a full-frame mirrorless camera aimed at the up-and-coming video or photo enthusiast. This camera comes with class-leading autofocus while still extremely capable for everyday and general photography use. Equipped with a 24.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor and DIGIC X image processor, the EOS R8 is optimal for full-frame RF lenses — allowing enhanced wide-angle field of views when compared to APS-C sensor cameras. Extremely lightweight and compact, the EOS R8 shoots up to 6-fps with 1st-curtain Electronic shutter, and up to 40-fps with full electronic. For users who've already explored interchangeable lens cameras but haven't yet broken into mirrorless, the EOS R8 should be the camera that takes them over the threshold to capture events, weddings, still life, travel and pets.

“My work is a lot about movement and not missing a beat with the fast shutter on the EOS R8 is so important to me as an artist.” Jasper Soloff – Photographer and Director

Alongside the camera bodies, Canon will release two new lenses. The RF-S lens line, optimized for the smaller APS-C sensor size, expands with the Canon RF-S55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM lens. This is a telephoto zoom, giving coverage equivalent to an 88–336mm lens on a full-frame camera. The lens opens the door to telephoto photography and videography, with 4.5 stops optical image stabilization, and close-focusing that can fill the frame with a subject roughly 2x3 inches in size (at its 210mm zoom setting, and minimum focus distance). And it does all this in an incredibly lightweight and compact package.

The Canon RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is a new, compact standard zoom lens for full-frame EOS R-series cameras. Ranging from true wide-angle to traditional “standard lens” coverage at 50mm, the lens is a travel friendly design with an extremely compact exterior. The RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens is just over 2 inches long when fully retracted, and under 3.5 inches when extended — weighing less than half a pound. Optical Image Stabilization, with 4.5 stops of shake-correction, further enhances its appeal for video and still-image shooting. It’s also useable on an APS-C sensor Canon camera, where the lens' effective coverage is equivalent to what a 38–80mm would deliver on a full-frame camera.

New Canon EOS R8 Full Frame Camera

Canon launches its lightest full frame EOS R System camera

New Canon F8 Full Frame Camera

London, United Kingdom 8th February 2023 – Canon Europe announces the EOS R8, a new full frame mirrorless camera, which inherits technology from the feature-packed EOS R6 Mark II. With a compact design similar to the EOS RP, this powerful combination gives photo/ video enthusiasts and students the tools they need to make the leap with their passion.

EOS R8 gives photographers the tools they need to step up creativity with full frame

Featuring a 24.2 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor, high ISO and improved dynamic range, the EOS R8 is the ideal choice for portrait, event and landscape photography delivering a wider, more artistic perspective. Accompanied by the launch of the RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM, a small lightweight RF series zoom lens, the pair create a compact yet powerful kit bag allowing photographers to explore creativity in full frame.

Full frame quality in a lightweight body

Offering all the benefits of full frame image quality, the EOS R8 features a 24.2 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor capable of achieving the same resolution as the EOS R6 Mark II. The class leading sensor offers a fast read out speed to unlock a number of advanced features including a reduced rolling shutter that enables 40fps continuous shooting and low noise high ISO up to 102,400. This makes the EOS R8 perfect for shooting in environments which are dimly lit in which subjects are moving around. Improved dynamic range also enables capture of striking images with bold colours and the full frame sensor offers shallower depth of field that creates a soft background to help the subject stand out.

Weighing approx. 461g (with card and battery), the EOS R8 is Canon’s lightest full frame EOS R System camera to date. Measuring 132.5 x 86.1 x 70mm the camera has similar dimensions to the EOS RP, with a number of additional professional level features contained in its compact body. The EOS R8 has a high resolution 2.36m dot EVF working at up to 120fps and UHS-II SD card support. The intuitive interface makes the camera easy to operate on the go with a useful mode dial featuring 12 modes across still and video shooting and a dedicated switch for moving between photo and movie capture.

Capture life in motion

The advanced sensor of the EOS R8 captures full width 4K 60p footage that is oversampled from 6K sensor data for sharp, detailed video content, as well as 180fps Full HD recording for slow motion videos. To support those wanting to upskill in video, this camera supports Canon Log 3 at 10-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 H.265 internal recording which offers greater dynamic range and more flexibility post production. Alternatively, HDR PQ and HDR Movie modes can be selected to suit those with a HDR workflow and produces a clean HDMI output to compatible devices.

To combat focus breathing during movie recording, the EOS R8 has a function that compensates for changes to the angle of view when adjusting the focus distance. The camera also gives extended recording times for up to two hours of normal video shooting1, ideal for capturing vlogs or shooting at events.

Featuring the same Dual Pixel CMOS AF II as the EOS R6 Mark II, the EOS R8 focuses in as little as 0.03 seconds2 even at 40fps with the electronic shutter. This intelligent system detects and tracks a range of subjects including animals, vehicles and people, offering head, face and eye detection for precision focus. For greater control, it is even possible to select which eye to prioritise. To simplify detection across such a broad range of subjects, users can choose the auto setting which selects the subject based on the composition of the image. This performance extends to low light shooting scenarios as low as -6.5 EV3.

Enhanced connectivity

With built in 2.4GHz Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® connectivity4 users can easily share their work and make use of the Camera Connect app, while the WPA/WPA2/WPA3-Personal authentication ensures a secure connection. For iPhone owners, the EOS R8 is iOS MFI certifiedTM 5 making direct download and operation possible. The EOS R8 can be used as a webcam with its USB video device class (UVC)/ USB audio device class (UAC) support. Users with an image.canon subscription can leverage the Neural Network Image Processing Tool6 for advanced noise and moiré reduction that achieves natural looking JPEG and HEIF images.

Canon has also made updates to image.canon, expanding its use to a number of new users with Adobe® Lightroom® movie and corporate support enabling compatibility with a range of services including Frame.io and Google Photo accountsTM7.

A small, light, everyday zoom

The RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is a small and lightweight lens with a 2x zoom and 24-50mm focal length, a great choice for improving photography and video skills particularly when shooting portraits, interiors or travel. It offers advanced image stabilisation up to 4.5 stops which increases to 7 stops when attached to an EOS R camera with IBIS, meaning creators and photographers can shoot video and stills in low light without the need for a tripod. The STM focusing motor is fast and quiet, with extra control from a customisable lens control ring that lets users switch between different modes so they can shoot and film like a Pro. Benefitting from the RF Mount, the RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM works with EOS R Series cameras to support a wide range of in-camera image enhancement features including panning in scene mode and focus breathing correction for movies.
