Kiso Observatory, University of Tokyo, commences full operation of 'Tomo-e Gozen,' a new observation system equipped with 84 Canon ultra-high-sensitivity CMOS sensors

TOKYO, September 30, 2019—Canon Inc. announced today that 84 of the Company's ultra-high-sensitivity CMOS sensors provided to the University of Tokyo Institute of Astronomy's Kiso Observatory have been employed as part of "Tomo-e Gozen," a new observation system on a 105 cm Schmidt telescope that will commence full operation from October 2019.

The main facility of Kiso Observatory, a 105-cm-diameter Schmidt telescope, has been used by astronomers for research activities since 1974. The Tomo-e Gozen system comprises an astronomical wide-field video camera and AI software and was newly developed with the aim of understanding the transient universe. Since 2014, Canon has provided the University of Tokyo with ultra-high-sensitivity CMOS sensors and cooperated in the development of the Tomo-e Gozen system. The camera part of Tomo-e Gozen was completed in April 2019 and, following a half-year engineering period, will commence full operation in October.

The 105 cm Schmidt telescope equipped with the Tomo-e Gozen camera
The wide-field video camera of Tomo-e Gozen uses Canon 35mm full-frame ultra-high-sensitivity CMOS sensors. While with typical image sensors noise tends to increase along with increases in pixel size, the Canon sensor features large 19µm x 19µm (micrometers) pixels and realizes ultra-high sensitivity with reduced noise. The 84 sensors of Tomo-e Gozen, with approximately 190 million pixels in total, obtain ultra-wide-field video data covering 20 square degrees* of the sky.

The Tomo-e Gozen system—which can obtain a variety of ultra-high-sensitivity and wide-field videos of space—will make possible the observation of scientifically important phenomena, such as supernovae explosions just after they occur and small asteroids that present a risk of colliding with the earth. The system is also expected to contribute to understanding the origins of life and the universe.

Canon will continue to support advances in science through the technological prowess it has cultivated as a leading imaging company.

*Square degrees are a unit used in astronomy to denote an area of sky. An area of 20 square degrees is equivalent to that of about 84 full moons.

Comment on the CMOS sensors used in Tomo-e Gozen"We were surprised at the high sensitivity and low noise of Canon's CMOS sensor, and decided to adopt it for Tomo-e Gozen instead of CCD sensors, which are widely used in astronomy. Unlike CCD sensors widely used in astronomy, the Canon CMOS sensors do not require cooling to suppress noise. Thus, Canon's CMOS sensors are indispensable for video observations of faint signals from the sky. We have been developing Tomo-e Gozen with Canon engineers on hand through active discussions with us directly. Canon has experience in such areas as light receiving surfaces and sensors with large pixels, and I appreciated the depth and breadth of their research. I'm looking forward to more characteristic product development from Canon from here on out."

Canon developing a remote-control solution for interchangeable-lens cameras

TOKYO, September 19, 2019—Canon Inc. announced today that the company is developing a remote-control solution for still photography that would realize remote operation for the company's interchangeable-lens cameras for professional users. The use of technology that enables the remote operation of cameras for still photo capture has been growing in such journalistic fields as sports coverage. Canon is moving forward with the development of a remote-control solution that enables remote operation of the company's interchangeable-lens cameras while taking the needs of users from around the world into consideration.

The solution currently under development employs a center-based system where the camera's optical axis is perpendicular to the unit's axis of revolution to make possible operation with a similar feeling to traditional shooting methods. Aimed at stills photographers, the remote-control solution mainly comprises the Remote Control Pan-Tilt System and Camera Remote Application, which can control multiple Remote Control Pan-Tilt Systems and cameras from a single PC. Enabling a single operator to control multiple cameras, the solution will contribute to enhancing the efficiency of photography workflows for journalists in the field.

Canon's new solution makes possible image capture from a variety of angles and viewpoints, allowing photographers to shoot images not possible through conventional shooting methods and capture the emotion and decisive plays of top-class athletes engaged in fierce competition. Going forward, Canon aims to create a system suited to a wide range of shooting needs that go beyond press coverage of sporting events, from use in TV and movie production to e-commerce and product photography applications.

In developing solutions that support press photographers in the field, Canon is further expanding frontiers for photographers to make possible new forms of imaging expression as well as contributing to the development of photo and video culture.

Canon launches two new practical pairs of Binoculars

Canon launches two new practical pairs of Binoculars including the World’s lightest binoculars with image stabilisation¹ the 8X20 IS
Canon launches two new practical pairs of Binoculars including the World’s lightest binoculars with image stabilisation¹ the 8X20 IS

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 19 September 2019: Canon Europe announces the addition of two new products to its range of image stabilised binoculars - the 420g 8x magnification Canon 8X20 IS, the world’s lightest image stabilised binoculars1, and the 10x magnification Canon 10X20 IS. These new models are highly portable and feature porro prism optics, a field-flattener lens and Canon’s Super Spectra lens Coating – perfect for getting a clear view when travelling, observing wildlife or at sporting events.

Bring the world closer with Canon’s latest compact, easy-to-use and light weight binoculars
Uniquely positioned as the only manufacturer to offer 11 current models in which all include Image Stabiliser technology, Canon sets a significant benchmark for binocular technology and viewing experience in the market. With magnifications ranging from 8x up to 18x Canon gives a choice of practicality, brightness, build quality and size with the stability and resolution of Canon designed and manufactured optics.

Designed for comfort, portability and easy handling, these lightweight models are compact enough to fit within a small bag yet give a comfortable grip and balance with a large, tactile focusing wheel and a conveniently placed Image Stabiliser button. The modest size of these models makes them an ideal choice for travel or wildlife enthusiasts looking for a convenient pair of binoculars with which to spot their subject. They also feature rubber eye-pieces for easy adjustment when wearing glasses and a dioptre to suit individual eyesight requirements.

Canon launches two new practical pairs of Binoculars including the World’s lightest binoculars with image stabilisation¹ the 8X20 IS
The Canon 8X20 IS and Canon 10X20 IS feature the same world-famous optics as Canon’s EF camera lens range, drawing upon unique technology that has been developed and refined over decades. The binoculars use a lens-shift optical image stabilisation technique that instantly corrects image shake through the movement of the third element in the optical assembly to provide comfortable observation at high magnification. This increases the effective resolution of the binoculars and prevents eye fatigue as the binoculars compensate for natural shake, body movement and external movement, such as the motion of a bumpy safari ride, allowing clear observations to be made whilst handholding the binoculars.

The steady view and magnification provided by the Canon 8X20 IS and Canon 10X20 IS also makes identifying small subjects easy, perfect for spotting birds, smaller wildlife or distant planes and trains, even when they are moving. With a closest focusing distance of two meters, both models allow detailed observation of a subject even when it moves significantly closer such as in a wildlife park or enclosed area.

Both models deliver exceptional sharpness and low distortion, extending to the edge of the image, thanks to Canon’s porro prism optics. The binoculars also have a Super Spectra lens coating, which reduces subject ghosting, minimises lens flare and maintains high contrast and natural colours. A field-flattener lens removes the curvature of the field of view, so observers can be sure they are getting a true and natural view of their subject.

Powered by a single CR123A battery located at the rear of the binoculars, both the Canon 8X20 IS and Canon 10X20 IS provide up to 12 hours of image stabilisation with a single button press activating the image stabilisation for a five minutes - making them the perfect choice for those embarking on lengthy outdoor treks or patiently observing wildlife.

Canon is committed to its optics, only ever being used to observe and appreciate wildlife, never to harm it. As such, the technology in these binoculars adheres to Canon’s philosophy of Kyosei, which means ‘living and working together for the common good’. By considering Canon’s optical products, customers can be assured they are supporting a brand which understands the importance of environmental sustainability and seeks to find solutions to protect our future.

Canon Free Viewpoint Video System to highlight footage of Rugby World Cup 2019™
Canon to operate production-level implementation of the Free Viewpoint Video System and provide highlight footage of Rugby World Cup 2019™

TOKYO, September 17, 2019—Canon Inc. announced today that during seven matches of Rugby World Cup 2019, to be held from September 20 to November 2, the company will provide highlight footage created by the Free Viewpoint Video System to the International Games Broadcast Services (IGBS). These video highlights feature viewpoints and angles not possible with conventional cameras, effectively conveying the thrill of such sports as rugby and delivering an experience that feels like being right on the field.

The Free Viewpoint Video System delivers an experience that feels like being right on the field

Canon will create Free Viewpoint Video content during all seven of the tournament matches to be held at the International Stadium Yokohama. Captured video footage will be curated into highlight reels that display the excitement and superb skill of each play from the ideal viewpoint and angle. Generated video will be provided to IGBS, who will then distribute the content to rights holders for broadcast, streaming, news, sports commentary programs and other forms of content viewing. In addition, content will be made available on the Canon homepage approximately 24 hours after the conclusion of each match. https://global.canon/en/event/rwc2019/special/viewpoint.html

Canon has continued to refine such aspects of the Free Viewpoint Video System as camera positioning, method of image capture, image-processing algorithms and hardware to achieve higher image quality and faster content generation workflows. The system is now capable of delivering high-quality, newsworthy content to broadcasters and content distributors. With the system, Canon is able to generate Free Viewpoint Video content and freely control its time and positioning. This technological evolution has been recognized by IGBS, thus laying the foundation for full-scale professional use by broadcasters.

With this tournament, Canon marks its entry into the volumetric video1 market, in which the company will begin business via the creation and delivery of sports video content to broadcast television and Over the Top2 media services. Going forward, Canon aims to apply this technology and provide video for live broadcast and video replay, alongside a wide range of event and entertainment genres beyond sports.

1Technology which entails the creation of a 3D space from captured images. The process does not involve the stitching of image data from multiple cameras; instead, an entire 3D space is rendered as data, thus enabling the generation of video from any position or angle within such space.
2Refers to audio and/or visual content distributed via the internet or a business that provides such services.

Canon to conduct 5G tests at Rugby World Cup 2019™ in Japan

TOKYO, September 18, 2019—Canon Inc. announced today that the company is proceeding with the development of technology that realizes high-speed image transfer of photos using cameras and an application through 5G (fifth-generation wireless network technology), which benefits from high-speed transfers of large volumes of data with little latency. As an official sponsor of Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan, Canon will conduct tests of press photo transfers using 5G at the tournament.

In cooperation with tournament supplier NTT Docomo Inc., Canon will conducts tests at multiple matches, including testing press photo transfers using 5G at the Japan v Russia Rugby World Cup opening match taking place on September 20 at Tokyo Stadium in Chofu, Tokyo. Using Canon cameras, lenses and an application currently in development, professional photographers shooting at the stadium will upload large volumes of image data at high speeds to such locations as photo collection servers and the cloud over 5G.

The tests will be conducted with the cooperation of over ten press organizations from both Japan and overseas. Applying the strengths of 5G—namely, the ability to transfer large volumes of data at high speeds with little latency—to the workflows of the professional photographers capturing the tournament's decisive moments will yield such advantages as journalists spending less time choosing which data to send back to their headquarters from the sidelines and enabling direct uploading of photos to company servers. By integrating 5G into photographer workflows, press organizations are aiming to realize high-level newsgathering that is both timely and flexible.

The tests are scheduled to take place at multiples matches, including those listed in the table below and at the tournament final.
