Canon received recognition as one of the 2019 World’s Most Ethical Companies
Canon U.S.A. Honored as One of the 2019 World’s Most Ethical Companies® by Ethisphere for Second Consecutive Year

Recognized for Its Positive Influence and Impact in Business Communities Across the Globe

MELVILLE, NY, February 26, 2019 – In its continual strive to take a proactive approach to corporate social responsibility initiatives and maintain strong standing as a good corporate citizen, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, received recognition as one of the 2019 World’s Most Ethical Companies. For the second year in a row, the Ethisphere Institute, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, bestowed the honor upon Canon as a company that makes it a mission to affect positive change in business communities across the nation.

“Today, employees, investors, and stakeholders are putting their greatest trust in companies to take leadership on societal issues,” said Timothy Erblich, chief executive officer, Ethisphere. “Companies that take the long view with a purpose-based strategy are proven to not only outperform but last. I congratulate everyone at Canon for earning this recognition.”

The World’s Most Ethical Companies assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient (EQ) framework, which offers a quantitative way to assess a company’s performance in an objective, consistent, and standardized manner. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics.

“For Ethisphere to honor Canon with this renowned title is a true reflection of the values, culture, and leadership that drive our organization,” said Kenneth Sharpe, vice president, corporate audit, ethics and business consultation, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “This distinction directly speaks to our versatility and dedication to help serve our communities through our advanced solutions and initiatives.”

In 2019, 128 honorees were recognized, spanning 21 countries and 50 industries. The thirteenth class of honorees profoundly illustrate how companies continue to be the driving force for improving communities, building capable and empowered workforces, and fostering corporate cultures focused on ethics and a strong sense of purpose.

Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (35 percent), culture of ethics (20 percent), corporate citizenship and responsibility (20 percent), governance (15 percent), and leadership and reputation (10 percent).

Canon New Cosmos of Photography 2019 Competition

Canon New Cosmos of Photography 2019 Competition
TOKYO, February 26, 2019—Canon Inc. announced today that the company will begin accepting entries for its New Cosmos of Photography 2019 (42nd edition) photo competition on April 17.

To promote the competition as a global photo contest, experts from outside Japan have also once again been invited to judge this year's competition.

Entries for New Cosmos of Photography 2019 will be accepted between April 17 and June 12, 2019, while the Excellence Award Selection Committee is to meet in July to choose seven Excellence Award winners and fourteen Honorable Mention Award winners. Later, in November, the Grand Prize selection committee is scheduled to meet to select one Grand Prize winner from among the seven Excellence Award-winning entries.

The Grand Prize winner of this year's competition will receive not only JPY 1 million in prize money and a Canon product, but as an added bonus will be granted the right to hold a solo exhibit at the exhibition of winning entries for next year's New Cosmos of Photography. Additionally, to support the continued pursuit of their creative activities, 2019 Excellence Award and Honorable Mention Award winners will each receive prize money and the right to display their works at this year's exhibition of winning entries.

The New Cosmos of Photography is Canon's cultural support project to discover, nurture, and support new photographers who pursue new possibilities in creative photographic expression. Launched in 1991, this year marks the 29th iteration of the annual contest, which, since its 25th iteration in 2015, has expanded to accept digital submissions (stills and video). What's more, promoting the competition as a global photo contest that elevates photographers and videographers playing an active role in the current art scene, this year's seven judges will include San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA) Curator Emerita of Photography Sandra Philips and Japanese photographer Mikiya Takimoto.

The New Cosmos of Photography encourages the creation of original works that push the boundaries of photography's potential and systematically assists and nurtures award winners through exhibitions and published collections of their winning works as well as through publicity on the New Cosmos of Photography website. To date, the New Cosmos of Photography contest has accepted 29,398 entries from both individuals and groups, and has turned out a great number of outstanding photographers who are enjoying widespread success around the world. As a result, the contest has come to be regarded today as a gateway to success for new photographers.

New Canon EOS RP Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

New Canon EOS RP Full-Frame Mirrorless
Full Frame For The Masses! Canon Introduces Its Second Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera — The EOS RP

New Super-Compact and Ultra-Lightweight EOS RP is Ideal for Users Looking to Graduate to Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera at an Affordable Price

MELVILLE, NY, February 13, 2019 – Responding to the demand from amateur and advanced amateur photographers for an entry-level, full-frame mirrorless camera, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the second camera in the EOS R lineup, the EOS RP. The EOS RP is designed for photographers looking to step up from Canon’s APS-C cameras: the EOS Rebel, EOS M and the EOS 80D, into the world of full-frame mirrorless photography. Weighing in at just 17.29 ounces, the EOS RP camera is lighter than a 500ml bottle of water and smaller than Canon’s popular APS-C DSLR camera, the Canon EOS Rebel T7i, coming in at approximately 5.0in (w) x 3.77in (h) x 2.36in (d). With optics at its core, the EOS RP takes full advantage of the complete line up of RF lenses and is compatible with the existing collection of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses with the use of one of three optional RF EOS-R Mount Adaptersi.

“As Canon continues to evolve its full-frame mirrorless cameras, our goal is that one day the EOS R line becomes as widely popular as our celebrated lineup of EOS DSLR cameras,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “As a company, we believe that in order for us to accomplish that goal, Canon needs to develop full-frame mirrorless cameras for every skill level of photographers and that starts with amateurs and advanced amateurs. This makes the EOS RP the perfect addition to the existing lineup.”

Canon EOS RP Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera
The new Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera features a 26.2 megapixel CMOS sensor that is powered by the company’s DIGIC 8 image processor, providing users with high-image quality, outstanding operation and functionality. The new Canon EOS RP features Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus (AF) with 4,779 manually selectable AF pointsii and a wide AF coverage area of 88 percent horizontal and 100 percent vertical.

With f/1.2 lenses, the camera astonishingly boasts AF sensitivity in low light in as little as Exposure Value (EV) -5. When using the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens with the EOS RP, the camera can focus in as little as 0.05 seconds with Dual Pixel CMOS AFiii. When using eye detection AF, the camera can automatically detect faces and focus on the eye of the subject. This feature is supported when the camera is set in either servo AF mode during continuous shooting and movie servo AF, as well as one-shot AF.

Like the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera that was announced in September 2018, the EOS RP is built around the same 54mm mount diameter and short-back focus. This allows for the use of one of three optional mount adapters for full compatibility with all existing EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses. Through the use of the optional Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter or Control Ring Mount Adapter, these lenses, in fact, gain functionality.

New Canon EOS RP Full-Frame Mirrorless
For photographers looking to further expand their abilities and capture a wide variety of both still and video images, the EOS RP features Visual Guide mode. First introduced with the EOS Rebel T7i and EOS 77D, this mode allows users to see on screen how switching modes on the mode dial or tweaking settings can alter the image they are about to capture. This mode helps to guide photographers to capture more compelling images, such as ones with a shallow depth-of-field or being able to give moving subjects a frozen or flowing look.

For those looking to expand their imaginative options, the camera also features Creative Assist mode that allows photographers to use new and unique visual effects and adjustments when shooting, such as brightness, contrast, saturation, color tone, monochrome and background blur. In addition, the design, ergonomics, layout and ease-of-use of the camera are very similar to that of other Canon cameras consumers might already be familiar with.

Additional noteworthy features of the EOS RP camera include:
  • Built-in 0.39 inch, 2.36 million dot Electronic Viewfinder with Touch-and-Drag AF
  • Vari-Angle LCD touchscreen
  • 4K UHD 24P/Full HD 60p video recording with 4K time-lapse shooting and the ability to extract still images from 4K video recordings
  • ISO range of 100-25,600 that is expandable up to ISO of 102,400
  • Built-in Wi-Fi®iv and Bluetooth®v technology
  • Mobile RAW workflow supported paired with Digital Photo Professional Express Appvi

Availability and Pricing
The Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera is scheduled to be available in March 2019 for an estimated retail price of $1299.00 for the body only. It will also be sold as a body-and-lens kit with the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for $2399.00*

Canon Launches Print for Action Initiative

Millennials Haven’t Killed Print: Canon Launches Print for Action Initiative to Show Print Remains an Influential Medium
Millennials Haven’t Killed Print: Canon Launches Print for Action Initiative to Show Print Remains an Influential Medium

New Canon U.S.A. Survey Finds 47 Percent of Americans Would Feel Sad in a World Without Print

MELVILLE, NY, February 13, 2019 – Print has long been a powerful medium to inspire action, from promoting social change to influencing purchasing decisions. It therefore comes with little surprise to Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, that nearly half of Americans would feel sad in a world without print, according to survey findings released by the Company today. The Canon Print for Action Survey1, conducted by Ipsos, uncovers consumers’ perception and use of printed materials, as well as the importance of print in the minds of tomorrow’s business leaders.

“We are pleased to find that, despite living in what seems like a digital world, Millennials still count on print for information and inspiration,” says Shinichi Yoshida, executive vice president and general manager, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “With our new Print for Action initiative, our goal is to highlight the power of print’s versatility by coupling Canon’s deep heritage in innovative imaging with proven statistics to educate and to help empower future business leaders.”

Statistics from the Canon Print for Action Survey reveal that the print medium has a favorable influence in many aspects of the lives of U.S. Millennials. From food and beverage purchasing decisions to study habits to relaxation techniques, print is a driving influence and one that seems here to stay. For instance, according to the Canon Print for Action Survey:
  • Millennials still send printed cards. In fact, for Valentine’s Day 2018, giving printed romance cards (30%) won out over sending e-cards (7%) for Millennials. Overall, in the twelve months prior to the survey1 more than half (51%) of Millennials gave someone a printed card for a celebratory moment or a holiday compared to just 18% that sent a digital greeting on those occasions.
  • Other than watching streaming services (56%), Millennials turn to books (48%) to relax. Nearly half of Millennials surveyed say reading a book makes them feel the most relaxed compared to activities like exercising (37%), cooking (37%) and meditating (21%).
  • Millennials still turn to print to plan out their days. In the twelve months prior to the survey1, 43% of Millennials used physical calendars and 30% of Millennials used planners for scheduling and staying organized.

The Canon Print for Action Survey covers more than just Millennials; its statistical findings span a range of demographics and market verticals. Generational findings all point toward the power of print, with only one-in-five Americans, as a whole, reporting that they rely solely on digital platforms.

With a breadth of expertise in production and wide-format printing, Canon print solutions and cutting-edge technology, including but not limited to the imagePROGRAF large format printer series and Océ Colorado wide format printer, help bring visions to life, which in turn have the power to influence the next generations of consumers. The Canon Print for Action Survey is the first component of an initiative meant to help Canon continue on its path of innovation to provide print solutions that spark creativity in the lives of consumers and help fuel its channel partners’ future success through the power of print.

From The Sidelines To The Endzone, Canon Displays Strong Presence At The Big Game In Atlanta

MELVILLE, NY, February 5, 2019 – On February 3rd, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, was proud to see an estimated 70 percent of professional photographers in the Atlanta stadium captured the Big Game between Los Angeles and New England with Canon cameras and lenses.

The sidelines were filled with Canon’s iconic white barrels from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. In addition to the sports photographers using Canon camera systems throughout the stadium, an extensive array of Canon HD and 4K UHD broadcast lenses were used to help deliver the live telecast to over 100 million viewers.

“As one of the premier sporting events in the world, the Big Game has become an iconic piece of American culture,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The opportunity that these photographers have on such a large stage is one that can launch a career with the push of the shutter. Canon is proud to help support these photographers on this important assignment, while also helping to broadcast every inch and angle of the game for viewers to enjoy at home.

A fixture at major sporting events throughout the year, the knowledgeable staff from the Canon Professional Services (CPS) team was on site at the stadium in the week leading up to game day to assist photographers in a multitude of ways. The CPS team kicked off preparations by bringing in loaner gear to supplement the arsenal of cameras and lenses owned by Canon professionals. On site, credentialed photographers were able to bring their gear to CPS for a thorough clean and check to help ensure their equipment was in peak condition and ready to go.

Right before game day, the CPS team hosted a Canon-sponsored luncheon dedicated to photographers capturing the Big Game. A Canon broadcast lens technician was also on site at the stadium in the days leading up to the Big Game, providing cleaning and maintenance services to help ensure optimal image quality could be achieved for the vast television viewing audience.

For veteran sports photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Damian Strohmeyer, Canon and CPS have always been a great resource throughout his career. Strohmeyer has shot the Big Game for 33 years, with 2019 marking his 31st consecutive year.

“Each year, CPS pulls out all of the stops for the Big Game,” said Strohmeyer. “But quite honestly, CPS service and support is phenomenal all year round. My Canon gear is incredibly important to help me get the job done. I always know what is going on with my gear, and I’m always supported if I need a replacement or want to try something new. Knowing that I have CPS behind me gives me great peace of mind – especially at an assignment as important as the Big Game.”

In 2019, Canon Professional Services will be on site to assist professional photographers at over 25 engagements, including major sporting, auto racing, Hollywood and political events.
