Canon’s Support Contributed to the Planting or Distribution of 460,000 Trees to Date

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 24, 2018 – With forest fires and severe weather sweeping the country and taking their toll on trees nationwide, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, stays steadfast in its commitment to support the Arbor Day Foundation’s “Replanting Our Forests” program. The Company successfully helped to contribute to the planting or distribution of 460,000 trees in the United States since 2009.

“It is through such initiatives that we demonstrate our dedication to Kyosei, engaging in activities that promote social and environmental responsibility,” says Toyotsugu Kuwamura, executive vice president and general manager, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are thrilled to help the Arbor Day Foundation revitalize forests in the United States in connection with their survival for future generations.”

The Arbor Day Foundation implements reforestation initiatives across the country to rebuild forests that are in desperate need of regrowth. Through this program, Canon helps contribute to the distribution and planting of one tree for every eligible imageRUNNER ADVANCE multifunction system sold from April 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018, up to a maximum of 50,000 trees. With the company’s support, trees this year plan to be planted and distributed in Bastrop Lost Pines Forest in Texas to support wildlife habitat improvement, Superior National Forest in Minnesota to help climate resiliency, and Withlacoochee State Forest in Florida for watershed restoration purposes.

“Canon’s corporate support is an incredible benefit to our program and we thank the team for their ongoing support,” says Dan Lambe, president, Arbor Day Foundation. “Their contributions can be seen through revitalized forests and communities that, until recently, had lost the benefits that a full forest brings to the environment.”

The Kyosei Philosophy
Canon’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei signifies that all people should work together for the common good. Canon seeks to achieve its goals of energy and resource conservation, as well as reducing environmentally hazardous materials used in its products. Canon shares this philosophy through various environmental, conservation, recycling and sustainability initiatives. To continue this initiative at home, Canon employees began to plant and dedicate trees on the Canon Americas headquarter grounds to commemorate certain anniversaries and milestones.

Canon participates in Earth Hour 2018

Canon participates in Earth Hour 2018 at 323 locations across 39 countries and regions

TOKYO, April 23, 2018—Canon Inc. announced that 323 of the Company's offices and operating sites across 39 countries and regions participated in Earth Hour 2018, even greater participation than that of 2017's event. Earth Hour 2018 was held in each locale from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. (local time) on March 24.

Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that began in 2007. The event encourages individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a statement to stop climate change and protect the global environment.

Canon has been expanding its lights-out activities around the world. Across various locations, Canon Group companies turned off lights at offices and operating sites as well as neon signs. This year's event started in Oceania, which is closest to the International Date Line, and moved around the world through Asia, Europe and the Americas. As an example of some of the activities carried out by individual Group companies, Canon (UK) Ltd. actively encouraged employees through the company's intranet site to participate in five specific activities: sharing your own lights out moment on social media, turning off electric lights and having a candlelit dinner party, going to your favorite viewing spot to see the lights switch off, improving your low-light photography skills and sharing the photos on social media, and making small promises for the planet such as those listed on the WWF website. A dedicated page within the Canon Global website provides an overview of the Company's global Earth Hour 2018 activities and awareness campaigns.

Through technological innovation and improved management efficiency, Canon aims to realize its "Action for Green" environmental vision: a society that promotes both enriched lifestyles and the global environment. Canon strives to reduce the environmental burden throughout the entire product lifecycle, thereby creating environmental frontrunner products.

This shift adjusts to vertical or horizontal camera position and includes an AF assist with coverage from 14mm and 24mm to 105mm focal lengths. In all, the Speedlite is a major step forward to helping beginners achieve better results, and may also be adopted by wedding and event photographers as an additional tool.

This dust and water-resistant lens has a 9-bladed circular aperture for beautiful bokeh effects, especially when utilising its 0.85m (2.79 ft) minimum focusing distance at wide apertures. AF is fast and responsive due to “Ring USM” technology and rear group focusing. The lens is composed of 14 elements in 10 groups and delivers corner-to-corner sharpness aided by a moulded glass aspherical lens and Canon’s anti-reflective Coating technology.

Canon Inspires Creative Professionals to ‘Unleash Print’ at Pure Digital 2018

At Pure Digital 2018 (Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 17-19 April), Canon Europe will explore the vital role played by digital print in bringing design to life and helping creative professionals fulfil the potential of their work.

As an exhibitor and headline conference partner, Canon will share its own insights and those of two European customers over the course of three presentations, one on each day of the event.

Mathew Faulkner, Canon Europe’s Senior Manager for Applications Development in Graphics and Communications, will be joined by UK-based professional photographer Clive Booth and Norwegian interior architect Maria Horgen to share their individual perspectives on how digital print enhances their creativity and gives them new commercial outlets for their work.

On Day 1 of the event (17.04.18), within a programme focused on the theme of Design & Creation, Canon Ambassador Clive Booth will showcase his work as a photographer and filmmaker, demonstrating how he has taken advantage of digital wide format print to extend the scope of his work and bring his images to wider audiences. He will present the case study of ‘The Ileachs Project’, a documentary captured through the medium of film and photography about life on the Scottish island of Islay, and how print added value to this project. The story is told through dramatic imagery of the work of lifeboat and air rescue services, as well as touching portraits of the islanders. Clive has recently been involved in a number of creative projects, including advertising campaigns, commercials and short films for House of Holland, George Michael, Canon Europe, Asus, Intel, House of Amouage, H&M, Ernst & Young, Fiat, Shu Uemura and L’Oreal. His clients include Hackett London, Louis Vuitton, Moet & Chandon, Silhouette Eyewear and MAC Cosmetics.

Visitors to the Pure Digital event will also have the chance to see Clive’s work for Canon in the launch campaign photography for the conceptual ‘Elemental’ beauty brand, devised by Canon to showcase the impact and effectiveness of print in a multichannel marketing mix. The campaign features stunning images captured by Clive to represent the four elements, earth, air, fire and water, across a range of executions from promotional communications and out-of-home advertising, to instore signage and point-of-sale promotion, as well as retail décor. On the Canon stand at Pure Digital (#12.103), application specialists will inspire visitors with the possibilities of digital print by guiding them through a ‘home-street-store’ walk-through of the Elemental campaign, illustrating the role of printed promotional graphics and digitally printed décor in the extended customer journey.

On Day 2 (18.04.18), Maria Horgen will contribute to the programme on Interior Décor & Brand Experience. Maria is an interior architect and the co-founder of ‘Dusty’, a new interior décor business launched at Oslo Design Fair in January 2018 in partnership with specialist interiors photographer and trend expert Jorunn Tharaldsen. ‘Dusty’ uses Canon wide format printing technology to reproduce original patterns from Art Nouveau wallpapers found in Norwegian heritage buildings, photographed using a Canon 5D MKIV DSLR camera and digitally enhanced and restored for modern-day interiors. These images were collated into a book called ‘Dusty’, co-authored by Horgen and Tharaldsen to catalogue the interiors and their colour palettes. The Dusty product portfolio incorporates digitally printed wallpapers which can be customised to the customer’s colour palette, as well as other interior design elements such as glass, furniture, wooden panelling and acoustic panels. Canon introduced Maria to Oslo-based print service provider and interior décor applications expert Pulp Grafisk AS, who have the digital printing capability to print the Dusty designs on demand.

Maria will be available throughout the event at the Canon stand, to talk to visitors about her new business venture and experience as an interior architect. Pulp Grafisk managing director Terje Gulbrandsen and senior project manager Anette Bjornstad will also be at the event to inspire other PSPs and give practical advice on how visitors can diversify their product portfolio with décor applications. In addition to printing the Dusty products, Pulp Grafisk is also providing marketing material and packaging to support the sales of the new décor brand.

On the final day of the event (19.04.18), Canon’s Mathew Faulkner will explore the unique creative, commercial and technical advantages of digital print in enabling personalised and customised design, sharing a portfolio of inspiring examples from a range of Canon customers active in interior décor, fine art and photography. With experience working in creative, print production and marketing roles, Mathew will demonstrate the value of print in today’s digital world and how it can help to ignite brand creativity.

Mathew comments: “At Canon, we believe passionately that print has unique potential to unleash the full impact of creative ideas. That can mean bringing striking photographic images or fine art to life in a physical form, realising powerful marketing campaign concepts across multiple channels from home to outdoor to store, creating personalised packaging that delivers a memorable unboxing experience, or transforming interior spaces with customised digitally printed wall coverings, flooring, window graphics and surface décor.”

“Pure Digital promises to bring the print and creative communities together to help creatives understand the full scope of digital print today, and we’re delighted to have the opportunity to share some inspirational Canon customer stories and highlight the spectrum of possibilities with print.”

‘Changing perspectives on an important issue’ important to visual storytelling

Photographers rank ‘changing perspectives on an important issue’ as the key ingredient to visual storytelling

London, UK, April 2018 – Canon Europe has revealed research into the power of visual storytelling in today’s society. Entitled ‘Visual storytelling: Getting the Shot’, it uncovers professional photographers’ views on successful visual storytelling, what it takes to get ‘the shot’, and the future of photojournalism.
Canon unveils new research into power of imagery
Photographers rank ‘changing perspectives on an important issue’ as the key ingredient to visual storytelling
World Press Photo 2018 category award nominee and Canon Ambassador, Giulio Di Sturco – More Than a Woman
Canon conducted the study to further understand the perspectives of professional photographers and to champion their storytelling passion. It comes in celebration of 26 years of partnership with World Press Photo, ahead of the 2018 award winners being announced on the 12th April 2018.
The key ingredients to a successful visual story
When asked to rank the most important ingredients for successful visual storytelling, 55% of respondents selected ‘provoking a change in perspective on a topic or issue’, as the primary definition. Other core ingredients of a successful image include, one that drives emotion (48%), has a strong supporting narrative (31%), reveals an untold story (25%) and has good composition (24%).
“Throughout history, photojournalists have been driven by their passion to capture ‘the shot’; a visual story that triggers debate, inspires action and alters perspectives”, says Lee Bonniface, CIG Marketing Director at Canon Europe. “Stories illuminate the unseen and give voices to the unheard. They tell us truths that must not be ignored and challenge us to act upon them. We commend the photographers that are pushing the boundaries in order to tell the inspiring, controversial and challenging stories that need to be told.”
What it takes to get the shot
When considering capturing the perfect shot, 95% of photographers cited preparation as paramount - ensuring they have researched the story, vision and angle.
Along with meticulous planning, photographers must be able to confidently rely on their kit to get the best picture possible, eliminating the chances of malfunctions, which could ultimately result in missing the shot. Over three quarters of the professional photographers surveyed (78%) use a full frame camera, with Canon as the preferred brand for nearly two thirds (63%). A camera which is reliable (94%) and intuitively easy to use (76%) are key to getting the shot, according to the photographers.
How do photojournalists know when they’ve got the shot?
Over half of the survey respondents (56%) agreed that knowing they’ve captured the shot is an instant feeling they get as soon they take the photo.
Canon Ambassador and World Press Photo 2018 category award nominee, Giulio Di Sturco, agrees. “The moment you get the shot, you just know. You feel that everything in the frame is in the right place and importantly, you’ve captured the essence of the story.”
The future of photojournalism
When asked about the future of photojournalism, photographers are divided. Over a third (37%) believe there will be a rise in quality photojournalism, with the growth of social media and the ease of sharing images and telling stories online as the primary reason (45%). However, 32% believe there will be a decline in photojournalism due to the rise in citizen journalism (35%), a shrinking traditional media landscape (26%) and fewer photojournalist roles (20.5%).
“It’s vital that we continue to support the photojournalists of today, as well as commit to nurturing the generation of tomorrow, to ensure the stories that need to be told continue to have a voice”, concludes Lee Bonniface.
Respondents also acknowledged the importance of technology in the future of visual storytelling. Whilst many believe that virtual reality (52%) and augmented reality (49%) will play a role, 47% of photographers’ kit bags have not yet expanded to include a broader range of photography equipment beyond their full frame DSLRs, lenses and accessories. Photographers strongly believe that, despite technological advances, their expertise and skill remains critical, with 96% saying there will always be the need for humans in the creative process.
